WATERLOO, OR FORT ERIE RAPIDS.<br />
A Village in the township of Bertie, situated on the Niagara Rirer, about two<br />
miles below the entrance to Lake Erie, and sixteen miles from Chippewa. A<br />
steam ferry-boat is established which crosses the river every half hour to the<br />
American vi)lage, " Blackrock," which is about two miles below Bixffiilo. There<br />
is an Episcopal church in the village, and a custom house.<br />
Population, about 180.<br />
Post Office, post three times a-week.<br />
Professions and Trades.—One grist mill, two stores, two taverns, one grocery,<br />
one waggon maker, two blacksmiths, one tailor, one cooper, two slioemakors.<br />
WATERLOO.<br />
A Village in the township of Waterloo, two miles north from Berlin, situated<br />
on a branch of the Grand River—contains about 200 inhabitants, principally<br />
Germans, who have a Lutheran meeting-house.<br />
Post Office, post twice a-week.<br />
Professions and Trades,—One grist and saw mill, one distillery, two stores,<br />
two taverns, two blacksmiths.<br />
WAWANOSH.<br />
A Township in the Huron District, belonging to the Crown; is bounded on<br />
the north by Crown lands; on the west by Ashfield; on the south by Colborne;<br />
and on the east by Crown lands, as yet unsurveyed. Tlie soil and climate of<br />
this township are excellent. The iliver Ashfield runs through its north-west<br />
corner; and the River Maitland runs <strong>com</strong>pletely through it from noi'th to south,<br />
making several bends in its course. This township is settling fast. In Wawa-<br />

nosh there are taken up 20.J0 acres, of which 87 are under cultivation.<br />

WAWANOSH. LAKE.<br />
A Lake in the north of the township of Sarnia, about half a mile from Lake<br />
Huron. It contains about 200IJ acres, and varies from six to eight feet in depth.<br />
The Riviere aux Perclies runs tiirough it.<br />
WELL AND.<br />
A Countv in the Niagara District. It <strong>com</strong>prises the townships of Bertie,<br />
Crowland, "flumberstone, Pelliam, Stamford, Tliorold, Wainfleet, and Willoughby.<br />
For tlie purpose of representation in the Legislative Assembly, it is<br />
united to the county of Lincoln.<br />
WELLAND CANAL.<br />
The (Channel of water <strong>com</strong>munication between Lakes Erie and Ontario,<br />
constructed to over<strong>com</strong>e the obstruction in the navigation between the two<br />
lakes, caused by the Falls of Niagara. Its entrance frcmi Lake Ontario, at Port<br />
Dalhousie, is iii the north-west corner of the township of Grantliam; it then<br />
pHsses throuu-li that township and the centre of 'I'horold, in the south of which<br />
; it .strikes the Welland River after leaving which it divides, and one branch<br />
runs straight on to Lake Erie, while the ntlier is carried to the Grand Rivcr.<br />
I'he Welland Canal was originally projected by Mr. Merritt, in the year 1818,<br />
Mid the work was <strong>com</strong>menced in 1824.
