Otonabee River, There is some good land in Douro. Timber— hardwoofl,<br />
intermixed with pine. There are two saw mills in the township. Douro i«<br />
settled prineii)ally l)y Irisii Catholics. Two thousand two hundred and fifteen<br />
acres of Crown lands are oi)eii for sale in the township, at 8*. currency per acpe.<br />

DOVER, EAST & WEST.<br />
A Township in the County of Kent; in shnpe a trianj^le; is bounded on th«<br />
west by Lake St. ("lair; on the north-east by the lownsiiip of (,"liatliam,- and on<br />
the south by the River Thames. Dover contains 13,237 acres, of which 2,432<br />
are under cultivation: about one-third of the whole is open prairie, well adapted<br />
for grazing; the remainder covered with good timber— -the soil is rich and<br />
fertile. That ])art of Dover East bordering on the Tiiames is well settled. T)u»<br />
township contains a mixed population, in number 1,242. A small stream runs<br />
through the upper portion of this township.<br />
The Canada Company possess 7500 acres in Dover; and 5,200 acres of Crown<br />
lands are open for sale in the township, at 8.s. currency per acre. There is a<br />
tannery in the township; and the registry olhcc for the county is kept about<br />
two miles below Chatham. Along the banks of the river are several wood<br />
wharves, for supplying steamboats with fuel.<br />

DOWNIE.<br />
A Township in the Huron District; is bounded on the north.east by Ellice;<br />
on tlie north-west by Fullartou; on the south-west by Blanshard; and on the<br />
soutli-east by South Easthope. In Downie 32,082 acres are leased or sold,<br />
2,777 of which are under cultivation. The River Avon runs across the townsliip<br />
from east to west; and two creeks pass, one through the north, and tlie<br />
other througli the south corner of tae township. The land is much the same as<br />
tliat of tlie atljoining ;ownsl'.i]>s.<br />
Population of Downie, 1,370.<br />

DRESDEN.<br />
A Settlement in the township of Dawn, just laid out at the head of the navigation<br />
of the east branch of IJear Creek. It is a good situation for a village;<br />
but at present it contains only one store, and three or four houses. Vessels of<br />
300 tons can load here.<br />
DRUMiMOND.<br />
A Township in the Bathurst District; is bounded on the north-east by the<br />
township of ik'ckwith; on the north-west by Lanark; on the south-west by<br />
Bathurst; and on the south-east by Elmsley. In Drummoi d 33,795 acivs are<br />
taken up, 9541 of which are under cultivation. The north and south branches<br />
of the Mississippi unite in the west corner of the township, where they are also<br />
joined by the River Clyde ; the whole forming one stream, which takes a north<br />
coarse till near the north corner of the townsliip, where it makes a bend, and<br />
runs to the east; when near the eastern border of the township it expands into<br />
the Mississippi Lake, which stretches away into the township of Beekwith.<br />
Several small streams stretch across the township. The town of Perth is situated<br />
near the south corner of the township. The base of the south of the<br />
township is granite, but excellent white freestone is found in great abundance<br />
through the centre of the township. There are many good farms in the township.<br />
In Drummond 3500 acres of Crown lands are open for sale at 8»'. c'y
