RAWDON.<br />

A Township in the Victoria District ; is bounded on the east by the township<br />

of Huntingdon ; on the iiortli by Marmora ; on the vest by Seymour ; and<br />

on the south by Sidney. In Rawdon 27,5«;J acres are taiu-n up, 5,818 ofwliich<br />

are under cultivation. The Marmora River passes tlirou^di the nortli-west<br />

corner of tlie township. There is a considerable (puintity of wet land in this<br />

township, but some of the land is of excellent ([uality. There is a grist and<br />

saw mill in the township. One thousand eii,dit iiundrLd and fifty acres of Crown<br />

lands are open for sale in Rawdon, at 8.v. c'y ])er acre.<br />

Population in 184:i, l.:51(), who are principally <strong>Canadian</strong>, with a few Irish.<br />

Ratable property in the township. £17,1U2.<br />

RAWDON.<br />

A small Village in the townsJiip of Rawdon, .sixteen miles from Belleville ;<br />

contains about 125 inhabitants, one grist and saw mill, two stores, and four<br />

taverns.<br />

REACH.<br />

A Township in the Home District ; is bounded on the east by the township of<br />

Cartwright, and a small portion of Mariposa ; on the north by Rrocii ; on the<br />

west by Scott and Uxbridge, and on the south by Whitby. In Reach 24,152<br />

acres are taken up, 4,.")79 of wliich are under cultivation. The south-western<br />

extremity of Skugog Lake jjrojects into the east of the township. The township<br />

of Reach contains some excellent land, particularly in its west and centre,<br />

•where the timber is principally hardwood ; in that portion of the township<br />

bordering on the lake, the timber is mostlj' pine. Five hundred acres of Crown<br />

lands are open for sale in Reach, at 8,v. c'y per acre. A village, called " Prince<br />

Albert," is situated in the township, on the road leading fi-om Windsor Bay to<br />

Skugog, and there are also five saw mills in the township.<br />

RENFREW.<br />

A County in the Bathurst District ; <strong>com</strong>prises the townships of Admaston,<br />

Bllthefield, Bagot, Bromlej-, Horton, Macnab, Pakeuham, Pembroke, Ross, Stafford,<br />

and Westmeath.<br />

RICE LAKE.<br />

A Lake situated between the Otonabee River and the River Trent. It is one<br />

of a chain of lakes extending froai the <strong>com</strong>mencement of the River Trent to the<br />

north-east of the Colborne District. The principal of these lakes, are "Balsam<br />

Lake," which is situated in the tov/nship of Fenelon ; Sturgeon Lake, in Fenelon<br />

and Verulam; Pigeon Lake, in Harvt-y ; Shemong Lake, situated partly in Emily<br />

and partly between Ennismoreand Smith; Shebautlcon Lake, between Smith and<br />

Harvey; and Trout Lake between Burleigh and Dunimer, and Smith and Douro.<br />

The latter lake discharges Itself into the Otonabee River, which forms the dividing<br />

boundary between tiie townships of Monaghan and Otonabee, and then enters<br />

Pice Lake. Sturgeon Lake is also connected by means of the Skugog River with<br />

the Skugog Lake, wiiicii is situated in the townships of Cartwright and Reach.<br />

Rice Lake and the Otonabee River are navigable as far as the town of Peterborough,<br />

and during the season of navigation, a steamboat runs daily from a<br />

landing place at the south of the lake, to Peterborough. These lakes are noted<br />

for the superior quality of the fish in tliem, which is taken in large quantities,<br />

particularly Jlaskelonge, Bass, ik,c. Considerable business has been carried<br />

on within the last two or three years, on these waters. In the lumber travle<br />

large quantities of pine and oak timber being carried down the Trent. In their<br />

Course, these lakes receive many small streams which are scattered over the<br />

various townships.
