WINDMILT. POINT.<br />

A Point of Land on the shore of the St. Lawrence, about one mile ea.st from<br />

Proscott; so called from the circumstance of a large windmill being erected<br />

there. Previous to the late rebellion there was a flourishing settlement here,<br />

which contained several good stone houses. Two battles were fought here<br />

during the rebellion; after the last of which the houses were set on fire by the<br />

military, and have not since been rebuilt.<br />

WINDSOR.<br />

A Village in the township of Sandwich, pleasantly situated on the Detroit<br />

River, opposite the city of Detroit, in Michigan. It was laid out in 18.'54, and Is<br />

a place of considerable business. 'l"wo steam ferry-boats [dy coiistaiitlv between<br />

this place and Detroit, 'i'he situation is healthy, the town being built on a high<br />

bank, from thirty to forty feet above the river, which is here about a mile in<br />

width. Wind.sor possesses barrack.s, which are occupied at present by a<br />

battalion of Rifles. In December, I8.S8 (during the rebellion), this place was<br />

attacked by a band of 400 .Americans and rebels, who crossed over from<br />

Detroit, and burned the steamer Thames, and two or three houses. They were<br />

charged by a party of militia, eighty in number, who, after firing two shots,<br />

<strong>com</strong>pletely routed them.<br />

Windsor contains about .SOO inhabitants.<br />

Professions and Trades.— One physician and surgeon, one brewery, one distillery,<br />

four stores, three taverns, seven groceries, one baker, two carpenters,<br />

two blacksmiths, two tailors, two shoemakers, one tinsmith, one bank agency<br />

(Montreal).<br />

The principal part of the pork, bacon, hams, lard, tongues, and beef were<br />

made from hogs and cattle imported from the Ignited States, and slaughtered and<br />

packed in Canada.
