under cultivation. A large lake called " Sturgeon Lake ", stretches across th-<br />
centre of the township, from west to east. A small lake, situated about the<br />
centre ^f the south border of the township, has a <strong>com</strong>munication with Sturgeon<br />
Lake. There is much pine timber in this township. Verulum contains a mixed<br />
population. There is one grist mill, and one saw mill in the township. 8817<br />
acres of ci'own lands are open for sale in VeruJam, at 8s. currency per acre.<br />

VESPRA.<br />
A Township in the Siracoe District, is bounded on the north by the township<br />
of Flos ; on the west by Sunnidale -,<br />
the south by Essa, Innisfil, and<br />
Kempenfeldt Bay. In Vespra 13,040 acres are taken up, 1722 of which are<br />
under cultiTation. The Nottawasaga River runs through the north-west <strong>com</strong>er<br />
of the township, and Willow Creek, a branch of the Nottawasaga, flows through<br />
nearlj- the centre of the township, and might easily be made navigable to<br />
within nine miles of Barrie. One branch of Willow Creek derives its source<br />
fi"om a small lake about four miles from Barrie, in the south-east corner of the<br />
township. The land on the bay is poor, sandy and stonj% but a short distance<br />
back it begins to improve, and the interior of the township contains good land.<br />
The town of Barrie is situated near the south-east corner of the township, on<br />
Kempenfeldt Bay, and the village of Kempenfeldt about two miles below it.<br />
In Vespra 11,400 acres of Crown lands are open for sale, at 8s. currency per<br />
aci'e. There are in the township one grist and two saw mills, and one distillery.<br />
Population in 1842,571.<br />

VICTORIA DISTRICT.<br />
Consists of the County of Hastings, which returns a member to the House of<br />
Assembly, and <strong>com</strong>prises the following townships— Elzevir, Grinisthorpe, Hungerford,<br />
Huntingdon, Lake, ilarmora, JMadoc, Rawdon, Sydney, Tudor, Thurlow,<br />
and Tyeudenaga. It is bounded on the east by the Midland District; on<br />
the noith by nnsurveyed lands; on the west by the Colborne and Newcastle<br />
Districts; and on the south by the Bay of Quinto.<br />
The district is watered by the Trent, the Moira, and the Salmon Rivers, and<br />
their branches; and there are numerous small lakes scattered over it.<br />
A large portion of the district consists of excellent land, and the townships of<br />
Sydney, Tlmrlow, and Tyendenaga contain many fine farms.<br />
Iron ore of superior quality exists in the townships of Marmora and Madoc ;<br />
and in the former township a bed of litliographic stone h:is been discovered,<br />
which, after being examined and tested by a lithographer in Ix)ndon (England),<br />
was pronounced of excellent quality; but I am not aware if the bed has yet been<br />
quarried.<br />
Clearing is going on rapidly in the distinct; and large quantities of potash are<br />
made. Eleven thousand five hundred acres of land were brought into cultivation<br />
between January, 1S42, and January, 1844.<br />
The district is settled principally by Irish and Scotch, U. E. Loyalists and<br />
their descendants, and ( !aiiadiaris.<br />
Belleville, the district town, is a thriving nlace. The only other villages in<br />
the district are Shannouville, in Tyendenaga; and a small settlement in each of<br />
the townships of Madoc i»nd .Marmora.<br />
Sixty-five thousand and eighty-three acres of Crown lands are open for sale<br />
in the Victoria District, at 8.v. currency per acre; to purchase any of which<br />
apjiiication must be made to the Crown Lands Agent, at Belleville.<br />
