centre of the to'wnship into Lake Erie. The Talbot Road runs through the<br />
tovrnship. Five thousand eight hundred acres of Crown lands are open for sale<br />
in Mersea ; and the Canada Company possess about 7,500 acres in the township.<br />
Population of Mersea, 798.<br />

METHUEN.<br />
A Township in the Colbome District; is bounded on the east by the township<br />
of Lake ; on the north by unsurveyed lands ; on the west by Burleigh<br />
and Dummer ; and on the south by Belmont. There is a large, irregidarly<br />
shaped lake situated in the north-west corner, and several smaller ones are<br />
scattered over the centre and south of the township. This township is but<br />
little settled, and no retm-n has yet been made from it. In Methuen 45,878<br />
acres of Crown lands are open for sale, at 8s. currency per acre.<br />
McGILLIVRAY.<br />
A Township in the Huron District ; is bounded on the north by the township<br />
of Stephen; on the west by the Sable River; on the south by Williams; and<br />
on the east by Biddulph. Most of the land in the township is good. McGillivi-ay<br />
contains 20,323 acres; 11,832 of which are leased or sold, of which SuS<br />
acres are under cultivation.<br />
Population 448.<br />

McKILLOP.<br />
A Township in the Huron District; is bounded on the north-east by Crown<br />
lands; on the north-west by the township of Hullett; on the south-west by<br />
Tuckersmith and Hibbert ; and on tlie south-east by Logan. The soil of this<br />
township is principally good. A branch of the ^Maitland River rims through<br />
its southern poition ; on which is a saw mill. There is a post office in tltt'<br />
western corner of the township, on the Huron Road. McKillop contains 53,42*2<br />
acres ; 6,790 of which are leased or sold, of which 789 are under cultivation.<br />
Population 321.<br />

McMULLEN'S MILLS.<br />

MIDLAND DISTRICT.<br />
Consists of the counties of Frontenac, Lennox, and Addington; it is bounded<br />
on the east by the Johnstown and Bathurst Districts; on the north by unsurveyed<br />
lands; on the west by the Victoria District; and on the south "by L;ilie<br />
Ontario and part of the Bay of Quinte. The islands of Amherst and Wolfe are<br />
included in the district. The district is watered by the Napanee, Salmon, and<br />
Cataraqui rivers, besides branches of the Mississippi, and numerous otlier sniiill<br />
streams; and lakes of various sizes are scattered over it. Tlie townships in tlxsouth-west<br />
and soutli of tlic district, <strong>com</strong>prising Kingston, Ernestown, Frcdericksburgh,<br />
Camden, and Richmond, contain excellent laud. The northern<br />
townships are some of them but little settled, and Kennebec and Kalador, Oidon<br />
and Oso, are altogether vacant. The foundation of tlie district is limestone, and<br />
in places fine marble is to be found; in (he north of the district there are btcte<br />
wiiich are a continuation of tiiose in tiie Hathurst District; and a bed of marble<br />
has lately been discovered in the township of ('amden, twenty-two miles nortliwest<br />
from Kingston. Much of tlie land in th(.' north and cast is poor and rocky<br />
and unfit for cultivation, but land of excellent quality is said to have been lately<br />
discovered to the nortlj of Kingston.
