NEWCASTLE.<br />
A pretty little Village in the township of Clark, five miles east from Bowmanville,<br />
and seventeen from Port Hope; it contains about 300 inhabitants.<br />
Churches and chapels two, viz., ]\Iethodist and Congregational. There is an<br />
Episcopal church a mile and a-half from the village.<br />
Post Office, post every day.<br />
Profesiiiuns and T/Yfffe.—Eight stores, one druggist, two tanneries, two taverns,<br />
one axe factory, two saddlers, four blacksmiths, two waggon makers, four tailors,<br />
two shoe makers.<br />
NEWMARKET.<br />
A Village in the tOAvnship of Whitchurch, three miles and a-half from HiAland<br />
Landing, and about thirty miles from Toronto. It is situated on the east<br />
branch of the Holland River, in the midst of a finely undulating, old settled, aiid<br />
well cultivated country, and is surrounded by very fine farms. The village<br />
was <strong>com</strong>menced about thirty years since, and was originally settled by Peni>sylvanian<br />
Quakers. The principal pai't of it is built on the south side of a gentfy<br />
sloping hill, forming one long narrow street ; the remainder of the village is<br />
built on the side of a hill, a little to the east. Newmarket contains about 600<br />
inhabitants. There are six churches and chapels, viz.. Episcopalian, Presbytenan.<br />
Catholic, Congregational, Methodist, and Christian.<br />
Post Office, post every day in sunimei', and three times a week in winter.<br />
Professions and Trades. — Three physicians and surgeons, two grist-mills,<br />
two breweries, one distillery, one tannery, one foundry, one carding machine<br />
and cloth factory, five stores, three taverns, one druggist, one painter, two ladies<br />
seminaries, one gunsmith, two cabinet makers, three blacksmiths, one watch<br />
maker, one tinsmith, six shoemakers, three waggon makers, two saddlers, three<br />
tailors, four carpenters, one hatter.<br />
NEWPORT, OR BHICH'S LANDING.<br />
A Settlement lately started in the south-east of the township of Brantford, on<br />
the Grand River, four miles from the town of Brantford. It contains at present<br />
about sixty inhabitants, one store, one tavern, and two storehouses for storing<br />
ffrain.<br />
NEWTON, OR CLARKE.<br />
.\ Village in the township of Clarke, twelve miles from Port Hope, laid out<br />
in the year 1834, contams about 130 inhabitants, who have a Presbyterian<br />
diurch.<br />
Post Office, post every day.<br />
Professions and Trades.—Three stores, one tannery, three taverns, one wagccon<br />
maker, one wheelwright and chair maker, two blacksmiths, one cooper, four<br />
shoemakers.<br />
NIAGARA DISTRICT.<br />
Consists of the counties of Lincoln and Welland, and the county of Haldimand,<br />
except the townships of Senica, Oneida, Rainham, and Waljiole. The<br />
"listriet is bounded on the north by Lake Ontario; on the east by tlie Niagara<br />
River ; on the south by Lake Erie ; and on the west by the (!ore and Talbot<br />
