ENNISKILLEN.<br />

A Township in the Western District; is Ijomided on the east by the township<br />

of Brooke; on tiie north by Plynipton; on tlie west by Moore; and on the south<br />

by Dawn. In Knniskillen, 2450 acres are taken up, 347 of which are under<br />

cultivation. The north brancli of Hear Creek runs across the township, entering<br />

it at its north-east corner, and making its exit at its south-west corner. This<br />

township possesses a larjj;e portion of excellent land, but it is as yet but little<br />

settled. Seven thousand five hundred acres of Crown lands are open for sale in<br />

Enuiskillen, at S.v. c'y per acre. There is a grist and saw- mill, and tannery in<br />

the township.<br />

ERAMOSA.<br />

A Township in the Wellinijton District; is bounded on the north-east by the<br />

township of Erin; on the north-west by Garafraxa; on the south-west by Nichol<br />

and (Juelph; and on the south-east by Nassagaweya. In Eraniosa 28,701 acres<br />

are taken up, 7,285 of which are under cultivation. A branch of the Grand<br />

River passes through the township. The upper portion of the township, to the<br />

bank of the river, is excellent" land; below, it is broken and stony. Eramosa is<br />

thickly settled, principally by Scotch and Irish, many of whom have fine farms.<br />

In tlie south-east of the townshiji, on a brancli of the Speed, there are "Strange's<br />

Mills " and shingle machine, and at the same place a last factory, blacksmith,<br />

and Quaker meeting-house. At " Murphy's Mills," or "Little Falls," there are<br />

a saw mill, carding macliine, fulling mill, and store. At "Cripp's Mills," on<br />

the town line between Eramosa and Nassagaweya, a grist and saw mill, and<br />

Store. Altogether there are six saw mills in the township.<br />

No census has been taken since 1841, wiien the population amounted to 935.<br />

ERIE, LAKE.<br />

The most southerly of the <strong>Canadian</strong> lakes; and also the most shallow. It<br />

forms the soutiiern boundary of the Niagara, Talbot, London and Western Districts.<br />

It is 231 miles in length; and, in its widest part, about 70 miles in<br />

breadth. It receives the waters of the upper lakes from the Detroit River; and<br />

discharges itself into the Niagara River. It is 564 feet above the level of the<br />

6i-a; and thirty feet below Lake Huron. Several small islands are scattered<br />

over the western extremity of the lake; only one of which, " Point Pele Island,"<br />

is inliabited. This is the most dangerous of all the lakes to navigate in stormy<br />

weather, jn consequence of the ground swell, from the shallowness of the lake,<br />

being very heavy. The banks vary in height; no portion of them, however, is<br />

above a hundred feet in height There are considerable quantities of red cedar<br />

on particular jjortions of the coast. The principal harbours on the <strong>Canadian</strong><br />

side of Lake Erie are Port Dover, Port Stanley, and the Rond 'Eau.<br />

ERIEUS.<br />

The name of a post office, in the township of Raleigh, on Talbot Road—ten<br />

miles from Blenheim. There is a tavern two miles farther west.<br />

ERIN.<br />

A Township in the Wellington District; is bounded on the north-east by the<br />

township of Caledon; on the north-west by Garafraxa; on the south-west by<br />

Eramosa; and on the south-east by Esqmsing. In Erin 32,447 acres are taken<br />

up, 7,945 of which are under cultivation. Much of the land in the township is<br />

hilly and stony. There is a small settlement in the south-west of the township<br />

called •' McMullen's Mills," where are a grist and saw mill, tavern and blacksmith's<br />

shop, and between forty and fifty inhabitants. There are one grist and four
