YOMK.<br />
A Township in the Home District; is bounded on the east by the township<br />
of Scarliorougli; on the north by Vaughan; on the west by Etobicoke, and a<br />
small portion of Toronto Gore; and on the south by Lake Ontario. In York<br />
55,236 acres are taken up, 24,238 of which are under cultivation. This is an<br />
old settled township, and much of it has b'jen long u:idcr cultivation. It is<br />
watered by tlie lluniber and the Don rivers, and their branches. The land in<br />
the south of the township, bordering on the lake, is poor and sandv; in the rear<br />
of the townsliip it improves in quality. There is a considerable quantity of pine<br />
in the township, and a large portion of the township is timbered with a mixture<br />
of hard wood and pine.<br />
The City of Toronto is situated in the south of the township, on the Bay of<br />
Toronto;<br />
and there are eight grist and thirty-five saw mills in the township.<br />

YORK.<br />
A Village in the township of Seneca, pleasantly situated on the banks of the<br />
Grand River, five miles from Caledonia, and nineteen from Hamilton. Considerable<br />
business is done iiere in the lumber trade. A grist mill, saw mill, and<br />
shingle factory were burned down in December 1844, which are about being<br />
rebuilt. York contains about 150 inhabitants. Churches and chapels, two, viz.<br />
Episcopal, and Wesleyan Methodist.<br />
Post Office, post three times a week.<br />
Professions and Trades —One physician and surgeon, two saw mills, (one of<br />
which has a gang of twelve saws,) three -stores, three taverns, two waggon<br />
makers, two blacksmiths, three tailors, two cabinet makers, four shoe makers.<br />

A Township in the Western District; is bounded on the east by the township<br />
of Mosa; on the north by Brooke; on the west by Dawn; and on the south by<br />
Ca uden West and the River Thames. In Zone 29,177 acres are taken up, 5,340<br />
of which are under cultivation. The River Sydenham (Bear Creek) crosses the<br />
township from its north-east corner to its south-west corner. This is a fine<br />
