the town and the River St. Lawrence. Tliis phice was formerly called by the<br />
French inhabitants " Point Malin," on acconnt of the ditticulty they experienced<br />
in ascending that portion of the river witii their " JJutcaux." Tiiere is a handsome<br />
stone jail and court-house. Churches and chapels four, viz., Episcopal,<br />
Catholic, Presbyterian and Jlethodist. A newspaper is published here, the<br />
" Cornwall Observer." Population of Cornwall about l.GUO.<br />
Post-office, post every day.<br />
The following government and district offices are kept in Cornwall: Judge<br />
of District Court, Sheriff, Clerk of Peace, Treasurer, Ins[)ector of Licenses,<br />
Collector of Customs, Crown Lands Agent, District Clerk, Clerk of District<br />
Court, Deputy Clerk of Crown.<br />
Professions and Trades.—Three physicians and surgeons, eight lawyers,<br />
eight stores, one foundry, two tanneries, eight taverns, one druggist, one bookseller,<br />
one auctioneer, one printer, four bakers, six groceries, two tin-smiths,<br />
four blacksmiths, five tailors, two watchmakers, two butchers, three coopers, six<br />
joiners and carpenters, one hatter, two painters, one ladies' scliool, two bank<br />
agencies, " Commercial," and " Montreal." Principal Taverns, " Chesley's,"<br />
and " Pitt's."<br />
CORNWALL.<br />
A Township in the Eastern District ; is bounded on the north-east by the<br />
reserve of the St. Regis Indians; on the north-west by the township of Roxborough,<br />
on the south-west by Osnabruck ; and on the south by the River St<br />
l^wrence. In Cornwall .")8,58.'3 acres are taken up, 13,024 of which are under<br />
cultivation. This is an old and well-settled township. The town of Cornwall<br />
Ls situated in its south-east corner, and the villages of Monlinette, and Millcroche,<br />
and the settlement of St. Andrews, are also in the township. There are four<br />
grist and four saw mills in the township. Population of Cornwall 3,907, who<br />
ai'e principally English, Irish, and Scotch.<br />

CORUNNA.<br />
A Town in the township of IMoore, five and a half miles below Port Sarnia ;<br />
laid out in 183.5 by the government. The town-plot contains about 400 acres,<br />
but has at present very few settlers. There is a saw and grist mill, supplied by<br />
a canal two miles long. The town-plot fronts on the River St. Clair. The<br />
road from Port Sarnia to Chatham ])asses through the town. Price of building<br />
lots, from six to twenty-four dollars.<br />
COVES, ISLE OF.<br />
An Island in Lake Huron, at the entrance to the Georgian Bay, about six<br />
miles from Cape Ilurd. The main channel from Lake Huron to the Georgian<br />
Ba}', lies between the Isle of Coves and Cat Island.<br />
CRAMAHE.<br />
A Township in the Newcastle District; is bounded on the east by the townsliip<br />
of Murray; on the north by Percy; on the west by Haldimand; and on the<br />
fwjuth by Lake Ontario. In Cramahe 48,332 acres are taken up, 15,473 of<br />
\Fhich are under cultivation. The village of Colborne is situated near the<br />
south-west corner of the township, and the village of Hrighton at its south-cast<br />
corner, both on the eastern road. Presiju' Isle Harbour is situated partly in<br />
this township, and partly in the adjoining township of ^Murray. The land in<br />
the north of th,' township is not of very good quality; that in the south is better.<br />
Timber, principally hardwood. There are three grist and sixteen saw mills,<br />
and one distillery in the township.<br />
