SHERBROOKE, SOUTH.<br />

A Township in the Bathurst District 4 is bounded on the north-east by the<br />

township of Bathurst ; on the north-west by North Sherbrooke ; on the west<br />

by Oso, and on the south-east by North Crosby. In South Sherbrooke 5,1 L9<br />

acres are taken up, 467 of which arcander cultivation. The north and middle<br />

branches of the Mississippi River run through the north of the township; and<br />

a chain of lakes, connected together by the River Tay, stretch along the southeast<br />

border of the township. South Sherbrooke is as yet but little settled. The<br />

base of the township is principally granite. In South Sherbrooke 19,800 acres<br />

of Crowu lands are open for sale, at Ss. c'y per acre.<br />

Population in 1842, 253.<br />

SHERBROOKE, NORTH.<br />

A Township in the Bathurst District ; is bounded on the north-east by the<br />

township of Dalhousie ; on the north-west by Levant ; on the west by Palmerston<br />

and Oso ; and on the south-east by South Sherbrooke. In North Sherbrooke<br />

8,305 acres are taken up, 1,516 of w^hich are under cultivation. A<br />

branch of the Mississippi River runs across the township, a little north of the<br />

centre. The base of the township is principally granite. North Sherbrooke is<br />

35 }-et but little settled, and 4,600 acres of Crown lands are open for sale in it,<br />

at 8*-. c'y per acre.<br />

Population in 1842, 350.<br />

SIDNEY.<br />

A Township in the Tictoria District ; is bounded on the east by the township<br />

of Thurlow ; on the north by Rawdon; on the west by ISIurray ; and on<br />

the south by the Bay of Quintt;. In Sidney 52,604 acres are taken up, 19,837<br />

of which are under cultivation. The River Trent passes through the north-west<br />

of the township. Sidney is well settled, principally by U. E. Loyalists and' their<br />

descendants, who have very good farms. There are four grist, and eight saw<br />

mills in the township. One hundred and fifty acres of Crown lands are open for<br />

sale in Sidney, at 8s. c'y per acre.<br />

Population in 1842, 3,363.<br />

Ratable property in the township, 54,863.<br />

SIMCOE.<br />

The District Town of the Talbot District, situated in the north-west corner<br />

of the township of Woodhouse, twenty-four miles from Brantford. Simcoe is<br />

well situated, in the midst of a fine, old-settled country, but being away from any<br />

public road, and having no regular means of <strong>com</strong>munication with any place<br />

except Brantford, it is kept rather in the hack-ground. Thei'e is a stone jail<br />

and court-house. Churches and chapels three: viz., Methodist, Baptist, and<br />

Congregationalist A weekly newspaper is published here, the " Long Point<br />

Advocate."<br />

Population about 1,400.<br />
