LANARK.<br />
A Village in the township of Lanark, situated on the River Clyde, twelve<br />
miles from Perth; contains about 250 inhabitants. Churches and chapels, three;<br />
viz.. Episcopal, Methodist, and Presbyterian.<br />
Post Office, post three times a week.<br />
Profest^ioiis and Trades.—Four stores, one tannery, one ashery, two taverns,<br />
one cabinet maker, one blacksaiith.<br />
LANARK.<br />
A Township in the Rathurst District; is bounded on the north-east by the<br />
township of Ramsay; on the north-west by Darling; on the south-west by<br />
Dalhousie; and on the south-east by Drunimond. In Lanark 40,901 acres are<br />
taken up, 10,4.'K) of which are inider cultivation. The township is well watered<br />
by branches of the Mississippi River, which are scattered over it: it contains<br />
some excellent land, and the timber is a mixture of pine and hardwood. Lanark<br />
is well settled, principally by Scotch emigrants, and contains many good farms.<br />
Seven thousand six hundred acres of Crown lands are open for sale in Lanark,<br />
at 8.S". currency per acre. The village of Lanark is situated in the south of the<br />
township: and there are also two grist and three saw mills in the township.<br />
Population in 1842, 2,129.<br />

LANCASTER.<br />
A township in the Eastern District, the most south-easterly township in<br />
Canada West ; is bounded on the north-east by Canada East or Lower Canada;<br />
on the north-west bv the township of Lochiel; on the south-west by Charlottenburgh;<br />
and on the south-east by Lake Si. Francis, a portion of the River St.<br />
Lawrence. In Lancaster 49,273 acres are taken up, 10,094 of which are under<br />
cultivation. This is an old and well-settled township, containing some good<br />
farms. It is well watered by numerous streams running across it from west to<br />
east, and all of which flow into the St. Lawrence. Timber—a mixture of pine<br />

LANSDOWNE.<br />
A Township in the Johnstown District; is bounded on the east by the township<br />
of Yonge; on the north by Bastard; (m the west by Leeds; and on the<br />
south by the St. Lawrence. The assessments for Lansdowne and tlie adjoining<br />
township of Leeds have been made togetlier; and the townships are divided into<br />
Leeds and Lausdownc in front, and Leeds and Lansdowne in rear. In Leeds<br />
and Lansdowne in front 27.49() acres are taken up, 5,821 of which are under<br />
cultivation. In Leeds and Lansdowne in rear 18,212 acres are taken up, 4,978<br />
of whicli are under cuhivation. Tlie principal part of the great Gananoque<br />
l/uke is situated in the east of the township— it empties itself into the Gananoque<br />
River, which enters the St. ]>awrence in the townsliip of Leeds. There are two<br />
small lakes in the north-west of the township. In Lansdowne 2,100 acres of<br />
Crown lands are open for sale, at 8.v. currency per acre. There are in the two<br />
townsliips tliree grist and six saw mills. 'I'liese townsliips are well settled, and<br />
contain good farms. In Lansdowne is a settlement called "Furnace Falls," or<br />
"Lyndluirst."<br />
