DELAWARE.<br />

A Village in the township of Delaware, on the western road, twelve miles<br />

west fr.im London, beautifully situated on the River Thames; this is one of tbe<br />

prettiest spots in Canada, with much the appearance of an English village.<br />

The scenery of the surrounding neighbourhood is very picturesque, and resembling<br />

the grounds about some of the fine old country seats in England. A<br />

handsome bridge, 900 feet in length, has been constructed across the Thames,<br />

which is generally considered the finest work of the kind in Canada. In the<br />

neighbourhood of Delaware are some fine farms, and the flats of the river form<br />

excellent grazing ground. Delaware was first settled in 1832, it contains about<br />

300 inhabitants, and a neat Episcopal church.<br />

Professions and Trades.— One grist and saw mill, fovir stores, two taverns, one<br />

saddler, one cabinet maker, two waggon makers, two blacksmiths, four shoemakers,<br />

two tailors.<br />

DEMORESTVILLE.<br />

A Village in the township of Sophiasburg, situated on the Bay of Quinte,<br />

opposite Big Island, which is reached bj- means of a bridge constructed across<br />

the bay. It contains about 400 inhabitants, who have two churches, Presbyterian<br />

and Methodist. There are also in the village, three stores, two taverns,<br />

one waggon maker, one blacksmith, two tailors, two shoemakers.<br />

Post Office, post three times a week.<br />

DERBY.<br />

A Township in the Wellington District; is bounded on the east by the township<br />

of Sydenham; on the north and west by unsurveyed lands ; and on the<br />

south by Sullivan. The Owen Sound Bay encroaches on its north-east corner.<br />

Dei'by has only lately been laid out, and no return has yet been made from it.<br />

DEREHAM.<br />

A Township in the Brock District ; is bounded on the east by the township<br />

of Norwich; on the north by Oxford; on the west by South Dorchester; and<br />

an the south by Malahide. In Dereham 23,068 acres are taken up. 3951 of<br />

which are under cultivation. Several branches of the Otter Creek run through<br />

the township. Timber— pine, intermixed with hardwood. The village of<br />

Tilsonburg is situated in the south-east corner. There are one grist mill and<br />

two ^aw mills in the township.<br />

Population in 1842, 1014.<br />

DETROIT lUVER.<br />

Foims the western boundary oi the County of Essex, in the Western District,<br />

dividing that portion of ('anada from the United States. It receives the<br />

waters of the upper lakes from Lake St. Clair, and discharges them into Lake<br />

Erie. It is about twenty-three miles in length, and from one to two miles wide.<br />

There are several islands in tbe river, varying in size, the principal of which<br />

are Bois Blanc, Fighting Island and Peach Island ; and the scenery on its banks
