settlements of "Zone Mills," or " Van Allen's Mills," and " <strong>Smith's</strong> Mills," are<br />

situated on Bear Creek; and on the Thames is the site of the old Moraviantown,<br />

the battle groimd where Tecumseth, the Indian Chief, was killed, in the<br />

year 1813. In Zone 800 acres of Crown lands are open for sale at 8s. currency<br />

p^ acre. There are two grist and two saw mills in the township.<br />

Population in 1845, 1231, who are principally emigrants from Great Britain<br />

and Ireland, with a few <strong>Canadian</strong>s.<br />

Ratable property in the township, £15,230.<br />

ZONE MILLS.<br />

A Settlement in the township of Zone, pleasantly situated on the east branch<br />

of Bear Creek, nine miles from the western road and the River Thames. It<br />

contains about 100 inhabitants; grist and saw mill, carding machine and fulling<br />

mill, one store, one waggon maker, one blacksmith.<br />

Post Office, post twice a week.<br />

ZORRA.<br />

A Township in the Brock District; is bounded on the east by the township<br />

of Blandford, on the north-west by South Easthope and Downie; on the west by<br />

Nissouri; and on the south by North Oxford and part of Blandford. In Zorra<br />

60,220 acres are taken up, 10,627 of which are under cultivation. This township<br />

contains very excellent land, and the timber is generally hard wood, maple, oak,<br />

elm, beech, &c. On the west side of the township, near its centre, is a spring,<br />

from which issues a large body of water, forming at once a creek of considerable<br />

size. The village of Embro' is situated a little south-west, and the village of<br />

Huntingford a little south-east of the centre of the township. There are one<br />

grist and three saw mills in the township.<br />
