Signal Systems:<br />

ATS - Au<strong>to</strong>matic Train S<strong>to</strong>p - Allows speeds of 90 miles per hour. System au<strong>to</strong>matically applies train brakes if<br />

a restrictive signal indication is not observed or warning alarm is not acknowledged.<br />

CTC - Centralized Traffic Control - Wayside signals protect possession of blocks. Signals and powered<br />

switches are also remotely controlled from the dispatching center <strong>to</strong> direct the movement of trains.<br />

DTC - Direct Traffic Control - Dispatching center gives authority for train movement by radio <strong>to</strong> train crew directly.<br />

CONNECTING AMTRAK BUSES<br />

The extensive network of Amtrak dedicated feeder buses connecting with the<br />

San Joaquins is essential <strong>to</strong> the route as at least 60 percent of all San Joaquin<br />

riders (in 2004-05) used one or more buses for a portion of their trip. Ridership<br />

analysis shows that feeder bus riders make longer than average trips, and therefore<br />

produce higher revenues per trip.<br />

The Department contracts with Amtrak for the provision of dedicated feeder bus<br />

services, and Amtrak then contracts with bus opera<strong>to</strong>rs. The bus routes function<br />

as direct parts of the Amtrak system, with coordinated connections, guaranteed<br />
