Chapter XIII–Environment and Land Use<br />

ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS<br />

By 20<strong>16</strong>, as the result of intercity rail travel:<br />

Congestion Relief–cut annual vehicle miles traveled in the <strong>State</strong> by a <strong>to</strong>tal of<br />

433 million miles (a net reduction of 178 million vehicle miles traveled compared with<br />

<strong>2005</strong>).<br />

Travel Mode Share–increase the intercity rail mode share by 2 1⁄2 <strong>to</strong> 3 times.<br />

Air Quality:<br />

• Continue <strong>to</strong> cause a net annual decrease in pollution from hydrocarbons and carbon<br />

monoxide in the <strong>State</strong>.<br />

• Continue <strong>to</strong> keep emissions below <strong>State</strong> and Federal maximum allowable levels<br />

for all pollutants, and pursue funding for research and development in<strong>to</strong> cleaner<br />

locomotive engines.<br />

Energy Efficiency–save the <strong>State</strong> a net of almost 11 million gallons of gasoline<br />

annually.<br />

LAND USE<br />

The Department supports efforts by cities and counties <strong>to</strong> promote transit-oriented<br />

development projects near Amtrak stations that enhance community livability by<br />

providing housing options, jobs, retail, and services within easy walking distance of the<br />

station. Recent or planned transit-oriented developments at 12 key Amtrak stations are<br />

described.<br />

PROGRESS IN MEETING ENVIRONMENTAL AND<br />

LAND USE GOALS<br />

The Department’s progress in meeting its environmental and land use goals is assessed<br />

for both current years and future years.<br />
