The goal is <strong>to</strong> expand this program <strong>to</strong> all major transit providers with connections<br />
<strong>to</strong> the <strong>State</strong>-supported routes.<br />
Streets and Highways: Finally, the Department works <strong>to</strong> ensure that the trains are<br />
well connected <strong>to</strong> streets and highways through proper design of stations and<br />
signage, including pathfinder signs on local streets and roads and highways that<br />
guide passengers <strong>to</strong> Amtrak stations.<br />
RAIL 2 RAIL PROGRAM<br />
The <strong>Rail</strong> 2 <strong>Rail</strong> Program that was introduced in 2002, began an era of dramatically<br />
improved interconnectivity between intercity and commuter rail and increased<br />
mass transportation mobility in Southern <strong>California</strong>. The ultimate goal of the<br />
Program is <strong>to</strong> coordinate schedules, ticketing and fares between Amtrak and<br />
Metrolink and Coaster. The first phase of the Program involving Metrolink and<br />
Amtrak allowed Amtrak ticket holders and Metrolink monthly ticket holders<br />
(for the Orange County and Ventura County lines) <strong>to</strong> have access <strong>to</strong> both Amtrak<br />
and Metrolink trains within the geographical limits of their tickets. Then, starting<br />
in 2004, the Program was expanded <strong>to</strong> the Coaster, where Amtrak ticket holders<br />
and Coaster monthly ticket holders have access <strong>to</strong> both Amtrak and Coaster trains<br />
between Oceanside and San Diego. Also, Metrolink and Coaster monthly ticket<br />
pass holders can use Amtrak trains on the weekends.<br />
This Program has been a breakthrough in the implementation of a truly seamless<br />
rail system in Southern <strong>California</strong>. Today, over 25,000 Metrolink monthly ticket<br />
holders and 5,000 Coaster monthly ticket holders a month take advantage of the<br />
Program <strong>to</strong> ride Amtrak trains. Pacific Surfliner ridership jumped <strong>16</strong> percent in<br />
the first year of the program, 14 percent in the second year, and six percent in the<br />
