D. STABILIZE STEEP DISTURBED SLOPESA naturally steep slope that is already stable and not slated for legally permittedconstruction shall be left undisturbed. Always maintain the overall naturaltopography of a site to the greatest extent possible. Slopes created from cut andfill during legally permitted construction may need structural solutions such asriprap, terracing, or retaining walls. Use native and adapted plants to increasesoil stability and visually break up structural elements with soft pockets ofvegetation. Where vegetation is unlikely to establish, riprap without additionalvegetation may be appropriate.Table 3-2: Soil StabilizationHANDBOOKSECTIONSediment Source Control BMPs(Section 4.2.2 Slope Stabilization andSection 4.2.3 Soil Stabilization)APPLICABLE BMPSSoil and Vegetation Restoration(Chapter 5)Pervious Pavement(Section 4.1.1.1)Slope Stabilization(Section 4.2.2)Paving Parking Areas and Roads(Section 4.2.3.1)Bare Soil Protection(Section 4.2.3.2)Deck Armor(Section 4.2.3.3)Snow Storage(Section 4.2.1.3)Parking and Vehicle Barriers(Section 4.2.3.4)Disturbed andCompactedSoilsxxxCOMMON WATER QUALITY PROBLEMSUnpavedDrivewaysand ParkingAreasxxSoil Erosionon SlopesxSnowplowsDisturbingSoilxRunoffthroughDecksx3.4.3 HYDROLOGIC SOURCE CONTROLThe Design Storm used for infiltration BMPs on small residential sites is the 20-yr/1-hr storm, approximately 1”/hr. Using the Natural ResourceConservation Service (NRCS) calculation spreadsheet is usually adequate fordesigning this storage capacity. Chapter 1, Urban Hydrology further discussesthe BMP Calculation Spreadsheet, and the most recent version of thespreadsheet with supporting materials can be downloaded at:http://www.tahoebmp.org/. See Table 3-3 for appropriate infiltrationtechniques that provide hydrologic source control for stormwater runoff fromdriveways, parking lots, and rooftops.TRPA BMP HandbookCHAPTER 3: Permanent BMP Planning and Selection2012 Page 3-7
