MANAGE ROADS AND ASSOCIATED ABRASIVES AND SNOW REMOVALACTIVITIESA winter snow climate demands intensive management of roads, driveways,and parking areas to minimize pollutants. This may include properly removingand storing snow, using abrasives and deicers efficiently, and sweeping largeparking lots and roadways where abrasives are applied. Identify proper snowstorage locations including flat or slightly depressed areas that are covered withvegetation and mulch, areas with good sun exposure, and areas upslope of BMPtreatment systems. Careless snowplow techniques and lack of snow stakes cancause damage to landscaping, natural areas, and BMPs such as infiltrationbasins.Locate snow storage areas separate from infiltration BMPs, and away fromstormwater inlets and conveyances to minimize ice and snow blockage that cancause stormwater to bypass infiltration and treatment BMPs. not feasible, infiltration basins can be approved by the regulatory agency todouble as snow storage if designed for a larger volume than the design stormbased on anticipated snow loads, and access accommodations are made toprevent snowplow damage. Table 3-6 lists several roadway and parking lotpollution prevention techniques for common water quality issues.Snow stored upslope of a slotted channel drain that conveys melt water into a subsurfaceinfiltration system.
