4.5.1.4 CLEAN WATER DIVERSIONAlternative Names: Clean Water SeparatorDESCRIPTIONClean water diversions are used to minimize water quality degradation bykeeping clean water away from active construction sites. These diversionstemporarily intercept and reroute water to 1) isolate surface waters from aconstruction area that is in or adjacent to water, or 2) divert upslope runoffaround an active construction site or one that is newly constructed, unstable, unprotected, or recently seeded, and discharge downstream or down gradientto a protected outlet. They will divert surface waters until the construction iscompleted, permanent BMPs are installed, and/or slopes are stabilized withvegetation and mulch.BMP DESIGN APPROACHPollutant SourceControlHydrologic SourceControlStormwater TreatmentSCALE OF APPLICATIONAll SFR and MFR < 1acreMFR 1-5 Acre andCICU < 5 acresMFR and CICU > 5acres and all WQIPsTYPE OF APPLICATIONTemporaryPermanentClean water diversion isolating a section of stream for project work.APPLICABILITY• Temporarily isolate and dewater project areas located in streams, lakes, orother water environments.• Temporarily intercept and divert upslope runoff around construction areasand discharge to stable point downslope.• Suitable for conveying runoff down steep slopes, particularly cut-and-fillslopes.• Useful for diverting, removing, and treating sediment-laden waterencountered during construction.Advantages• Prevents or minimizes contamination of clean surface waters due toconstruction activities.• Maintains a dry construction area.TRPA BMP HandbookChapter 4: BMP Toolkit2012 4.5.1.4-Clean Water DiversionPage 1
