4.2.4.2 HAZARDOUS MATERIAL <strong>MANAGEMENT</strong>Alternative Names: Hazardous Material Handling, Storage, and Safety,Underground Tank Management.DESCRIPTIONImproper storage, handling, use, and disposal of hazardous material and theirwastes can convey toxic compounds such as hydrocarbons, heavy metals,nutrients, suspended solids, and other pollutants to the environment. Thedischarge of pollutants can be prevented and reduced by limiting the use,handling, and storage of hazardous materials in developed areas. Undergroundtanks require specialized handling and permitting to prevent soil andgroundwater contamination.APPLICABILITYHazardous materialmanagement is appropriate forall construction sites anddeveloped properties whereuse and storage of hazardousmaterial occurs.
