1.3.3.2 NRCS BMP CALCULATION SPREADSHEETMODEL SUMMARYThe Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) developed the BMPCalculation Spreadsheet to assist Conservation Districts and project designersto properly size storage facilities to detain and infiltrate stormwater runoff atthe Less Than 1 Acre scale. The BMP Calculation Spreadsheet targets design ofstorage facilities to meet TRPA regulations, which require containment of thestormwater runoff volume generated by a 20-year return period, 1-hourduration “design storm” from impervious surfaces on a parcel. The calculationof runoff volume in the BMP Calculation Spreadsheet is made by multiplyingthe intensity of the 20-yr/1-hr design storm (generally taken as 1 inch of rain in1 hour) by the area of each impervious surface defined by the user. BecauseBMPs designed in accordance with TRPA regulations store and then infiltraterunoff, implementation of facilities designed using the BMP CalculationSpreadsheet provides hydrologic source control to maintain or reduce runoffvolumes.BMP Calculation Spreadsheet output will confirm for a user if the design of astorage facility will satisfy TRPA regulations for a specified impervious area.APPLICATIONBMP CALCULATIONSPREADSHEETLess Than 1 Acreand SFRPROJECT SCALE AND COMPLEXITY1 to 5 Acres andCICUGreater Than 5AcresSizing Conveyance× × ×Sizing Storage Facilities √ • ×Estimating Pollutant Loads× × ×APPLICATIONSThe BMP Calculation Spreadsheet is designed for Sizing Storage Facilities. Itcannot be used to Size Conveyances and will not provide Pollutant LoadEstimates. The BMP Calculation Spreadsheet is the recommended model for SizingStorage Facilities at the Less Than 1 Acre scale (the model was specificallydesigned for this application). The model may also be used to Size StorageFacilities at the 1 to 5 Acre scale as site conditions allow. The method can be used to size storage facilities to be filled with drain rock(e.g., drip line infiltration trenches) or open basins. It also includes an optionfor water spreading over a vegetated area.TRPA BMP HandbookCHAPTER 1: Urban Hydrology2012 Page 1-15
