MANAGE ROADS AND ASSOCIATED ABRASIVES AND SNOW REMOVALACTIVITIESA winter snow climate demands intensive management of roads, driveways, and parking areas to minimize pollutants. This may include properly removingand storing snow, using abrasives and deicers efficiently, and sweeping largeparking lots and roadways where abrasives are applied. Identify proper snowstorage locations including flat or slightly depressed areas that are covered withvegetation and mulch, areas with good sun exposure, and areas upslope of BMPtreatment systems. Careless snowplow techniques and lack of snow stakes cancause damage to landscaping, natural areas, and BMPs such as infiltrationbasins.Locate snow storage areas separate from infiltration BMPs, and away fromstormwater inlets and conveyances to minimize ice and snow blockage that cancause stormwater to bypass infiltration and treatment BMPs.
