germinate if the compost does not reach temperatures of 140-160 degrees for 3or more days.Perennial weeds regrow from the roots, and can be very difficult to control.Although TRPA discourages pesticide use generally, in the case of someperennial weeds, careful application of an herbicide may be needed to killthem. Contact LTWCG for recommendations and assistance. All equipment used that comes in contact with weeds must be washed and allplant parts removed in order to prevent spread. The California Invasive PlantCouncil has produced a handbook specifically on BMPs for Land Managers toprevent the spread of invasive plants from one work site to another (seehttp://www.cal-ipc.org/ip/prevention/landmanagers.php).Herbicides have potential human and water quality impacts. All other weedcontrol methods should be considered and eliminated before chemicalapplication is considered. If herbicides are used, application must be madeaccording to label directions to protect applicators, others, and theenvironment. Herbicides should not be used near water or StreamEnvironment Zones (SEZs) except in consultation with TRPA to determinecompatibility with the TRPA Code of Ordinances, Chapter 60.1.Do not use “weed and feed” combination herbicide/fertilizer products. Theytypically lead to over-application of both herbicide and fertilizer and may harmadjacent trees, neither of which is desirable in the Lake Tahoe Region.Herbicides are not generally recommended for use in the Lake Tahoe watershed. Ifherbicides are used, application should always be consistent with product labeling.TRPA BMP HandbookCHAPTER 5: Soil and Vegetation Management2012 Page 5-15
