The principles of LID areintended to reduce the transport of runoff and pollutants from the site atwhich they are generated. More information on LID principles is availablethrough the US Environmental Protection Agency website 8 . Additionally,many of the BMPs outlined and discussed in this BMP Handbook can beconsidered LID practices.The objective of LID site design is to mimic natural hydrology through the useof techniques that maintain hydrologic functions such as runoff storage,infiltration, and ground water recharge, while lowering runoff volumes andfrequency of discharges. LID uses integrated and distributed parcel-based andmicro-scale stormwater retention and detention areas, reduction of impervioussurfaces, and lengthening flow paths and runoff time 9 . as riparian buffers, wetlands, steep slopes, trees, flood plains, woodlands, andhighly permeable soils. 10LID is unlike conventional approaches that convey and manage runoff in largefacilities located at the base of drainage areas. LID can reduce or eliminate theneed for traditional storm drain piping and centralized stormwater facilities.LID techniques are encouraged in the Lake Tahoe Region.
