4.1.1.2 INFILTRATION BASINAlternative Names: Infiltration PondDESCRIPTIONAn infiltration basin is a large engineered structure designed to detainstormwater runoff and infiltrate the detained runoff over a period of days.Infiltration basins, while similar in design to a dry basin, do not include anoutlet structure that is designed to slowly draw down the water quality storagevolume of the basin. Infiltration basins designed as on-line facilities include ahigh-flow bypass or emergency spillway. Infiltration basins designed as off-linefacilities may not have an emergency spillway, as runoff can be designed tobypass the facility based on the elevation of the water stored in the facility.BMP DESIGN APPROACHPollutant Source ControlHydrologic SourceControlStormwaterTreatmentSCALE OF APPLICATIONAll SFR and MFR < 1 acreMFR 1-5 Acre andCICU < 5 acresMFR and CICU > 5acres and all WQIPsTYPE OF APPLICATIONTemporaryPermanentAPPLICABILITY• Not appropriate for soils with infiltration rates less than 1”/hr or areas withseasonally high groundwater (e.g., SEZ) where groundwater contaminationand low Ksat rates are concerns.• Site above-ground infiltration basins on relatively flat terrain (less than a 5percent slope).• Subsurface infiltration basins can be sited on terrain steeper than 5 percent;however, engineering design and installation procedures are more complexfor this type of application.TRPA BMP HandbookCHAPTER 4: BMP Toolkit2012 4.1.1.2-Infiltration BasinPage 1
