• Jetties must extend sufficiently landward to prevent their detachment fromshore if severe backshore erosion or failure occurs.• If the jetty is enclosing a marina or similar protected area, the designer mustdemonstrate that there will be no adverse effects on water quality andcirculation.• The jetty must be structurally stable enough to resist wave action and thescour hydraulics caused by incoming waves.8.6.4 INSTALLATIONDue to the complexity and site-specific requirements, jetties must be designedby licensed engineers who regularly design in-water structures of this type andinstalled by qualified professional construction personnel.8.6.5 MAINTENANCEInspect jetties periodically for signs of excessive scour. Repair when observedas needed. If the flushing rates of the jetty area associated with a commercialmarina are too slow to provide adequate scour and removal of contaminantsthen toxic concentrations may accumulate in the deposited sediments. Inaddition, fluctuations in water quality parameters, such as turbidity anddissolved organics may be induced by construction, frequent boating and thealtered hydraulic and circulation patterns. TRPA or State regulatory agenciesmay require ongoing monitoring of water quality.CHAPTER 8: Shorezone Protective Structures and BMPsTRPA BMP Handbook8.6 Jetties 2012Page 8-50
