The Pneuma pump is a piece of dredging equipment that combines thetechnology of hydraulic suction head and the mechanical shovel. The dropshovel is lowered off the back of the barge and trailed behind to force thebottom substrate material to penetrate through the shovel and into thecylinders where it can be removed by the hydraulic suction heads. The Pneumapump is well suited for the removal of fine-grained sediment (sand, silt andorganics). The Pneuma pump also offers high solids concentration (up to 90percent) in the dredge slurry, with minimal initial or re-suspension turbidity. Each dredging project will present its own unique set of issues and risks andeach must be given individual attention. Plans for a dredging project shouldinclude the following:• A map which shows the boundaries and depths of the proposed dredgingproject• The volume of material to be dredged• A description of the dredging method to be employed• Location of dredged spoils disposal• Type and thickness of any turbidity barriers, including a description of howthe sides and bottoms will be anchored and the amount of freeboard• A project schedule (dates, time, duration)• Location of project access routes, haul routes, staging areas, and temporarystorage areas• Information (e.g., a site survey) regarding the presence or absence of Tahoeyellow cressOnce a facility maintenance need has been determined and an application topermit a dredging operation has been submitted, the client, consultant, contractor, and regulator work together to evaluate the environmentalconditions. Based on this process, the team should sort through a reasonablywide variety of alternatives in order to find the best set of feasible managementpractices for the setting and activity. These BMPs are then ranked according tocriteria such as their effectiveness, logistical feasibility, and cost. Once thisassessment has been made, project-specific BMPs can be identified.Operational and construction windows are a management tool designed to mapout the times of year during which facility maintenance or constructionactivities may be limited due to the presence of a threatened or endangeredspecies. Construction windows may consider aquatic, avian, or terrestrialwildlife activity such as spawning, congregation, migratory movement, nesting, incubation, hatching, and emergence. 5151USACE, 2008, Coastal Engineering Manual - Parts I-6TRPA BMP HandbookCHAPTER 8: Shorezone Protective Structures and BMPs2012 8.9 DredgingPage 8-61
