A total <strong>of</strong> approximately 400 questionnaires were administered and divided<br />

under the following categories:<br />

• Section one: personal information;<br />

• Section two: the information needs and seeking behaviour <strong>of</strong> rural<br />

women: This included:<br />

(i) Health information needs, purposes, sources and ICTs used<br />

(H) Educational information needs, purposes, sources and ICTs used<br />

(iii) Social welfare information needs, purposes, sources and lCTs used<br />

(iv) Agricultural information needs, purposes, sources and ICTs used<br />

(v) Commerce and trade information needs, purposes, sources and ICTs<br />

used<br />

• Section three: enhancement <strong>of</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> life and social welfare<br />

• Section four: hindrances to lCT tools and services<br />

• Section five: training needs.<br />

6.12 Research Methods (Qualitative) - Section III<br />

6.12.1 Case Study Method<br />

This method helped to collect and present descriptive information about<br />

women in rural communities in both Kenya and South Africa and their use <strong>of</strong><br />

ICTs. According to Soy (1997:1), case study research also clarifies otherwise<br />

complex issues by extending strength and adding experience to what is<br />
