Lastly, ALIN-EA's respondent reported that the mission <strong>of</strong> the network was<br />

to improve the development practices and livelihoods <strong>of</strong> communities in the<br />

arid areas <strong>of</strong> Eastern Africa by enhancing the capacity <strong>of</strong> community<br />

development workers (CDWs) to generate, access and share appropriate<br />

information.<br />

8.4.2 Purpose <strong>of</strong> organizations<br />

The respondents were asked to briefly explain what the purpose <strong>of</strong> their<br />

organization was. This question sought to clarify the rationale behind each <strong>of</strong><br />

the four organizations and their accruing functions.<br />

To this end, the NCRF respondent explained that the NCRF was established<br />

with the purpose <strong>of</strong> lobbying for the diversification <strong>of</strong> the airwaves in South<br />

Africa, and fostering a dynamic broadcasting environment in the country<br />

through the establishment <strong>of</strong> community radio stations.<br />

According to the AfriAfya respondent, the purpose <strong>of</strong> AfriAfya is to improve<br />

the health standards <strong>of</strong> the rural community through the proVision <strong>of</strong><br />

re packaged information. While the purpose <strong>of</strong> ALIN-EA is to support<br />

Community Development Workers (CDWs) through the encouragement and<br />

exchange <strong>of</strong> ideas on development work, Women'snet respondents reported<br />

that their purpose was to enhance capacity building, and information<br />

creation and dissemination through electronic and print media.<br />

8.4.3 Positions in the organizations<br />

The respondents were asked to state the positions they held within their<br />

respective organisations. The aim <strong>of</strong> this question was to determine the<br />

respondents scope <strong>of</strong> management and the extent to which they influence<br />
