2.2.6.1.8. Wananchi Online Limited<br />

Wananchi On line (2002) reportedly commenced business in March 2000,<br />

with the sole aim <strong>of</strong> becoming the leading ISP in Africa. The report indicates<br />

that Wananchi Online's mission is to provide comprehensive, efficient and<br />

reliable Internet and information services to corporate organizations, small<br />

to medium-sized enterprises, and individuals using the most up to date<br />

technology. According to the report, Wananchi Online created Kenya's most<br />

affordable and radical pricing policy for internet connectivity, making<br />

Internet affordable and accessible to the Kenyan market. Today, Wananchi<br />

Online is committed to ensuring that the African continent becomes more<br />

widely accessible as the world heads toward becoming one global village.<br />

2.2.6.1.9 UUNET Kenya Ltd.<br />

Reports from UUNET (2001) indicate that this organisation started operating<br />

in 2001, and maintains over 50% <strong>of</strong> the Internet Bandwidth available in<br />

Kenya. The reports explain that UUNET is also a major global organization<br />

that provides a range <strong>of</strong> Internet services to more than 70,000 business<br />

customers worldwide. In Kenya, UUNET has a customer base <strong>of</strong> over 500<br />

corporate organisations, and has expanded countrywide to cover major<br />

economic centres with over 13 Points <strong>of</strong> Presence (PoP). By providing ISP's<br />

with Internet backbone services, UUNET expects to not only solve bandwidth<br />

problems, but also provide individuals with better browsing and surfing<br />

speeds.<br />

2.2.6.1.10 Kenya Data Networks (KDN)<br />

Hoskins (2004) explains that Kenya Data Networks (KDN) is a full service,<br />

data communications carrier, which was licensed by the Communications<br />

Commission <strong>of</strong> Kenya (CCK) in January 2003 as a public data network<br />
