EVidently, ICTs enable most women to keep abreast <strong>of</strong> current affairs. Many<br />

rural women underscored the role ICTs play in daily news broadcasts. Most<br />

(91.5% in South Africa and 91.0% in Kenya) respondents felt that ICTs,<br />

particularly the radio and TV, helped them socially enrich their lives. This<br />

was followed closely by the need to keep in touch with family and friends<br />

(81.0% in South Africa and 87.0% in Kenya). To most respondents, the<br />

mobile phone was particularly useful in this regard. Under entertainment,<br />

the respondents listed the ability to listen to music and other entertaining<br />

programs as important. With the help <strong>of</strong> ICTs, this service recorded the<br />

highest result overall, with 94.0% for Kenya and 71.5% for South Africa.<br />

Interestingly, although the use <strong>of</strong> the fax machine (44%) stood out as an<br />

important activity, particularly in South Africa, it scored dismally in Kenya<br />

(16.0%).<br />

Additionally, the P-Value on how ICTs have enhanced the rural<br />

women's quality <strong>of</strong> life illustrates that the:<br />

• P-Value <strong>of</strong> listening to news is greater than 0.05 ( no significant<br />

difference)<br />

• P-Value <strong>of</strong> keeping in touch with family and friends is greater than<br />

0.05 ( no significant difference)<br />

• P-Value <strong>of</strong> entertainment is less than 0.05 ( significant difference)<br />

• P-Value <strong>of</strong> faxing documents is less than 0.05 ( significant difference)<br />

• P-Value <strong>of</strong> data processing is greater than 0.05 ( no significant<br />

difference)<br />

• P-Value <strong>of</strong> research is less than 0.05 ( significant difference)<br />

• P-Value <strong>of</strong> e-commerce/trade is greater than 0.05 (no significant<br />

difference)<br />

• P-Value <strong>of</strong> contacting business support agencies is less than 0.05 (<br />

significant difference)<br />
