In line with the types <strong>of</strong> ICTs used and how they are implemented amongst<br />

rural communities, the AUN-EA respondent further listed the following:<br />

(i) AUN-EA uses a web-based practical guide for trainers, extension<br />

workers and farmers, namely: The Online information service for Non­<br />

chemical Pest Management in the Tropics (OISAT Info). The ALIN-EA<br />

respondent noted that OISAT Info is a practical guide that helps minimize<br />

pest damage in a safe, affordable, effective and ecologically-sound way and<br />

provides tips on lowering the cost <strong>of</strong> production based on recommended<br />

alternative pest, disease and weed control methods. He further explained<br />

that the OISAT concept (from-web-to-field-to-web) promotes the validation<br />

<strong>of</strong> local knowledge, and ALIN-EA, in collaboration with the ministry <strong>of</strong><br />

Agriculture, piloted this project and involved farmers in Kyuso - Mwingi<br />

district.<br />

(il) The ALIN-EA respondent observed that the network has established a<br />

technical wing, Baobab Communications Ltd. (BAOCOM), which is a company<br />

that enhances access to ICTs by NGOs, schools and Community Based<br />

Organisations (CBOs). The company supports sustainable development and<br />

works to improve the supply chain for refurbished computers at affordable<br />

cost.<br />

(iii) The ALIN-EA respondent further stated that the network has mobilized<br />

civil societies in ICT projects to form the Kenya Civil Society Caucus to the<br />

World Summit on Information Society in order to participate in developing<br />

Kenya's ICT policy. According to the respondent, ALIN-EA fundraised and<br />

trained members <strong>of</strong> the civil society on policy issues and organized a<br />

delegation to the World Summit on Information Society in Geneva and Tunis.<br />

(iv) The network, in collaboration with other partner organisations, has<br />

placed ICT equipment in over 50 Community Information Centres (CICs) in<br />

the region. To this end, these centres feature World Space digital satellite<br />
