8.2.3 Women'snet<br />

Women'snet (2006: 1-2) states that the organisation was launched in March<br />

1998, as a joint initiative between the South African Non-Governmental<br />

Organization Network (SANGONet) and the Commission on Gender Equality<br />

(CGE). The report asserts that Women'snet contributes to gender equality<br />

and justice in South Africa through the use <strong>of</strong> ICTs. This is facilitated by<br />

training women, girls, and women's and gender organizations.<br />

Women'snet South Africa is therefore a vibrant and innovative networking<br />

support programme designed to enable South African women to use the<br />

Internet and other relevant ICTs in order to find the people, issues,<br />

resources and tools necessary for women's social activism and<br />

empowerment.<br />

8.2.4. National Community Radio Foundation (NCFR)<br />

The NCRF (2006: 1) records indicate that the organization was launched in<br />

December 1993 in Orlando, Soweto, as a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organization. According<br />

to the report, the NCRF is a national, member-driven association <strong>of</strong><br />

community radio stations and support service organizations. The NCRF has<br />

well over 80 member community radio station projects which are licensed<br />

and broadcast 24-hours/ 376 days a year on-air. The report states that the<br />

NCRF has service prOViders whose work contributes towards the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> radio stations through the provision <strong>of</strong> media training and<br />

content developing services.<br />
