In order for the training to be effective amongst rural women, it was found<br />

that the following factors need to be taken into consideration:<br />

• Training needs assessments have to be conducted in order to<br />

determine the set <strong>of</strong> knowledge the women need most<br />

• Training has to be geared towards economic empowerment<br />

• Training should be conducted within the community to enable<br />

individuals to perform family duties in the evening<br />

• Needs surveys have to be conducted in order to establish the training<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> the pa rticipa nts<br />

• Training has to be relevant in terms <strong>of</strong> the daily activities carried out<br />

by women. In other words, participants have to be trained according<br />

to their occupational needs - as an example, small and medium scale<br />

entrepreneurs (SMME's) would require training in records<br />

management, in addition to other training needs (Women'snet)<br />

How can ICT initiatives be developed and applied, particularly amongst<br />

women in rural areas?<br />

Which factors are critical for the success <strong>of</strong> an organization that works<br />

with rural women and leTs?<br />

Which are the key areas <strong>of</strong> activity that should receive constant and<br />

careful attention in projects that work with rural women and ICTs?<br />

The development, management and implementation <strong>of</strong> ICT initiatives is an<br />

ongoing debate, particularly in African countries. It was established in<br />

chapters 8.4.9, 8.4.10 and 8.4.11, that ICTs are necessary tools in<br />

development and when used appropriately, can contribute towards<br />
