equipment. Users are able to download web-based text and images via the<br />

satellite without phone lines, irrespective <strong>of</strong> their geographical location.<br />

To ensure the continuity <strong>of</strong> these projects, the AUN-EA respondent<br />

explained that the network trains community members at each <strong>of</strong> the<br />

information centres in basic information technology skills and operating the<br />

equipment.<br />

On the Whole, the ALIN-EA respondent noted that the network has impacted<br />

on rural development at various levels in the following ways:<br />

• "Supported partner organizations in Kenya and Tanzania with<br />

volunteers for a period <strong>of</strong> one year. The volunteers build the capacities <strong>of</strong><br />

the institutions on the documentation <strong>of</strong> community projects, information<br />

dissemination and management using appropriate ICTS"<br />

• "Communities have benefited from AUN-EA info products that include<br />

publications, CD-RaMs, videos, and capacity building on various<br />

development issues"<br />

• ''The CDWs working in rural areas have enhanced their ICT skills, can<br />

access ICTs easily and get updated and appropriate development<br />

information"<br />

The AfriAfya respondent noted that the organisation has contributed to the<br />

socio-economic gains <strong>of</strong> the community by:<br />

• "ProViding information that is relevant and applicable to each unique<br />

individual"<br />

• "Providing training/capacity bUilding in the use <strong>of</strong> ICT eqUipment"<br />

• "Providing equipment that was once perceived to be the reserve <strong>of</strong> the<br />

urban elite"<br />
