6.12.6 Data analvsis and presentation<br />

The completed 400 questionnaires and case studies formed the basis <strong>of</strong> data<br />

analysis and interpretations. A coding scheme was developed for the<br />

questionnaires and input into the Statistical Package for Social Sciences<br />

(SPSS). Data was then analyzed using descriptive statistics where<br />

frequencies, percentages, means and p-values were calculated. Data was<br />

then presented accordingly. Relationships among variables and<br />

interpretations were also made.<br />

According to Mugenda and Mugenda (1999:174) content analysis involves<br />

logical groupings <strong>of</strong> data with similar messages. In this study, open-ended<br />

responses and recorded interviews were analysed using content analysis,<br />

methodology.<br />

6.13 Problems encountered<br />

A major problem that was encountered by this study involved distance. This<br />

is because most rural women in both South Africa and Kenya reside in<br />

marginalised areas that have poor road infrastructure. The researcher was<br />

therefore forced to hire a vehicle for transportation in order to conduct the<br />

field survey. This exercise proved very costly.<br />

Most rural households are also widely dispersed from one another. The<br />

researcher was therefore forced to travel long distances in search <strong>of</strong><br />

respondents. This was very time consuming.<br />

6.14 Summary<br />

The chapter has discussed the research methods, designs and techniques<br />

applied in the study. The survey research method and case study was<br />
