Section 204During all stages of construction, route and distribute hauling and levelingequipment over the width and length of each layer of material.Compact embankment side slopes with a tamping type roller or by walkingwith a dozer. For slopes 1.75:1 or steeper, compact the slopes as constructionof the embankment progresses.(b) Rock. Place rock in horizontal layers not exceeding 12 inches incompacted thickness. Material composed predominantly of boulders or rockfragments too large for 12-inch layers may be placed in layers of up to 24inches thick. Incorporate oversize boulders or rock fragments into a 24-inchlayer by reducing them in size or placing them individually according to (c)below. Place rock layers with sufficient earth and smaller rocks to fill thevoids. Compact each layer according to Subsection 204.11 before placingthe next layer.Construct the top 12 inches of the embankment with topping or other suitablematerial.(c) Individual rock fragments and boulders. Place individual rock fragmentsand boulders greater than 24 inches in diameter as follows:(1) Reduce rock to less than 48 inches in the largest dimension.(2) Distribute rock within the embankment to prevent nesting and fill thevoids between them with finer material.(3) Compact each layer according to Subsection 204.11.(d) Earth. Place earth in horizontal layers not exceeding 12 inches incompacted thickness. Incorporate oversize boulders or rock fragments intothe 12-inch layers by reducing them in size or placing them individually asrequired in (c) above.Compact each layer according to Subsection 204.11 before placing the nextlayer.110
