Section 559Lay fabric so that drainage is over and not against or along the laps. Lay a halfwidth of fabric on the asphalt and press into place expelling all entrapped airand obtaining close contact with the surface.Mop coat the top of the first strip, so as to completely conceal the weave andan adjoining section of concrete surface slightly wider than half the fabricwidth. On this mopping lay a full-width strip of fabric and press into placecompletely covering the first strip. Mop this second strip and an adjoiningsection of concrete surface slightly wider than half the fabric width. Place athird strip of fabric so as to lap the first strip by not less than 4 inches. Continuethis process of lapping each strip of fabric at least 4 inches over the stripplaced before the last strip until the entire surface is covered with 2 layers offabric. Lap the ends at least 12 inches. Do not allow the fabric to touch anunmopped surface.Mop the entire surface with hot asphalt after all fabric is placed. Apply asphaltat a rate not less than 12 gallons per 100 square feet of finished horizontalsurface and not less than 15 gallons per 100 square feet of vertical surface.Regulate work so at the close of a day's work all fabric in place ismopped. Take special care to ensure that all laps are sealed.At the edges of the membrane and at places where it is punctured by openingssuch as for drains or pipes, prevent water from getting between the waterproofingand the waterproofed surface.Provide flashing at curbs and against girders, spandrel walls, etc. with separatesheets that lap the main membrane at least 12 inches. Seal flashing with eithera metal counterflashing or by embedding the upper edges of the flashing in agroove joint filler.Provide approved water stops for expansion joints, both horizontal and vertical,according to Section 560. Install membrane across all expansion joints asrequired.Repair or replace any membrane waterproofing that is found to leak. Samplingfrequency and location where samples are to be taken will be specified in thecontract.559.04 Membrane Waterproofing with Mortar Protection.
