Section 555(b) Plates.(1) Direction of rolling. Unless otherwise shown on the drawings, cutand fabricate steel plates for main members and splice plates for flangesand main tension members, not secondary members, so that the primarydirection of rolling is parallel to the direction of the principal tensileand/or compressive stresses.(2) Plate cut edges.(a) Edge planing. Remove sheared edges on plates thicker than 0.625inches to a depth of 0.25 inches beyond the original sheared edge, orbeyond any re-entrant cut produced by shearing. Fillet re-entrant cutsbefore cutting.(1) Oxygen cutting. Oxygen cut structural steel according toANSI/AASHTO/AWS Bridge Welding Code D1.5.(2) Visual inspection and repair of plate cut edges. Visually inspectand repair plate cut edges. The cut edges shall conform toANSI/AASHTO/AWS Bridge Welding Code D1.5.(b) Flange plates. Furnish flange plates with either oxygen cut edgesthat have the corners chamfered at least 0.0625 inch by grinding orfurnish Universal Mill plates unless oxygen cut edges are required.(c) Web plates. Oxygen cut to the prescribed camber web plates ofbuilt-up beams and girders, box girders, and box arches. Cut sufficientextra camber into the webs to provide for all camber losses dueto welding, cutting, etc.(d) Truss members. Prepare, by oxygen cutting, all longitudinal edgesof all plates in welded sections of truss web and chord members.Chamfer, by grinding the edges of the corners of plates not joined bywelding, at least 0.0625 inches.430
