ASPHALT TACK COATDescription412.01 This work consists of applying an emulsified asphalt tack coat.Tack coat emulsified asphalt grade is designated as shown in AASHTO M 140or AASHTO M 208.Material412.02 Conform to the following Subsection:Emulsified asphalt 702.03Construction Requirements412.03 Equipment. Use equipment conforming to Subsection 409.04.412.04 Surface Preparation. Prepare the surface for a tack coat accordingto Subsection 303.07. When the surface is concrete, remove excess joint andcrack filler.412.05 Weather Limitations. Apply asphalt tack coat on a dry, unfrozensurface when the air temperature in the shade is above 35 bF and rising.412.06 Asphalt Application. Where using slow-setting emulsified asphalt,dilute by adding an equal amount of water to the emulsified asphalt.Apply the asphalt according to Subsection 409.08 at a rate of 0.03 to 0.15gallons per square yard. When a tack coat cannot be applied with an asphaltdistributor spray bar, apply the tack coat uniformly and completely by foggingwith a hand spray attachment or by another approved method.If excess asphalt material is applied, squeegee the excess from the surface.Allow the tacked surfaces to completely cure before placing the coveringcourse. Place the covering course within 4 hours of placing the tack coat.303
