Section 204(e) Embankment outside of roadway prism. Where placing embankmentoutside the staked roadway prism, place material in horizontal layers notexceeding 24 inches in compacted thickness. Compact each layer accordingto Subsection 204.11(a).(f) Other Embankments. Where placing embankment on one side of abutments,wing walls, piers, or culvert headwalls, compact the material usingmethods that prevent excessive pressure against the structure.Where placing embankment material on both sides of a concrete wall or boxstructure, conduct operations so compacted embankment material is at thesame elevation on both sides of the structure.Where structural pilings are placed in embankment locations, limit the maximumparticle size to 4 inches.204.11 Compaction. Compact as follows:(a) Rock embankment. Adjust the moisture content of the material to amoisture content suitable for compaction. Compact each layer of materialfull width with one of the following:(1) Four roller passes of a 50-ton compression-type roller(2) Four roller passes of a vibratory roller having a minimum dynamicforce of 40,000 pounds impact per vibration and a minimum frequencyof 1000 vibrations per minute(3) Eight roller passes of a 20-ton compression-type roller(4) Eight roller passes of a vibratory roller having a minimum dynamicforce of 30,000 pounds impact per vibration and a minimum frequencyof 1000 vibrations per minute.Proportion the compactive effort for layers deeper than 12 inches asfollows.` For each additional 6 inches or fraction thereof, increase the number ofroller passes in (1) and (2) above by four.` For each additional 6 inches or fraction thereof, increase the number ofroller passes in (3) and (4) above, by eight.111
