Section 552After placing the concrete, operate finishing machine over the concrete asneeded to obtain the required profile and cross-section. Keep a slight roll ofexcess concrete in front of the cutting edge of the screed at all times. Maintainthis excess of concrete to the end of the pour or form and then removeand waste it. Adjust rails or headers as necessary to correct for unanticipatedsettlement or deflection.Remove rail supports embedded in the concrete to at least 2inches below thefinished surface and fill and finish any voids with fresh concrete. Finish thesurface with a float, roller or other approved device as necessary to removeall local irregularities.Remove all excess water, laitance, or foreign material brought to the surfaceusing a squeegee or straightedge drawn from the center of the slab towardseither edge. Do not apply water to the surface of the concrete during finishingoperations.(b) Straightedging. Check all slab and sidewalk surfaces. Check the entiresurface parallel to the centerline of the bridge with a 10-foot metal straightedge.Overlap the straightedge at least half the length of the previousstraightedge placement.Correct deviations in excess of 0.125 inches from the testing edge of thestraightedge. For deck surfaces that are to receive an overlay, correct deviationsin excess of 0.25 inches.(c) Texturing. Produce a skid-resistant surface texture on all driving surfacesby grooving. Use one of the following finishes or a combinationthereof for other surfaces as required.(1) Grooved finish. Use a float having a single row of fins or an approvedmachine designed specifically for sawing grooves in concretepavements. Space fins 0.5 to 0.75 inches on centers. Make the grooves0.063 to 0.188 inches wide and 0.125 to 0.188 inches deep. Grooveperpendicular to the centerline without tearing the concrete surface orloosening surface aggregate. If grooves are sawn, cut the grooves approximately 0.25 inches wide at aspacing of 0.5 to 1 inch.392
