<strong>The</strong> Fifth Chapter for Recitation<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir mind, and after purifying <strong>the</strong>ir mind, at <strong>the</strong> break-up of <strong>the</strong> body,<br />

after death, <strong>the</strong>y arise in a fortunate destiny, in a Heavenly world. This<br />

is <strong>the</strong> reason or cause, Ānanda, why a Realised One's disciple is worthy<br />

of a Shrine.<br />

And for what reason or cause is a Universal Monarch worthy of a<br />

Shrine? (Thinking): ‘This is <strong>the</strong> Shrine of a Righteous Monarch, a<br />

Righteous King’, Ānanda, many people purify <strong>the</strong>ir mind, and after<br />

purifying <strong>the</strong>ir mind, at <strong>the</strong> break-up of <strong>the</strong> body, after death, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

arise in a fortunate destiny, in a Heavenly world. This is <strong>the</strong> reason or<br />

cause, Ānanda, why a Universal Monarch is worthy of a Shrine. <strong>The</strong>se,<br />

Ānanda, are <strong>the</strong> four (persons) worthy of a Shrine.”<br />

<strong>The</strong>n venerable Ānanda, after entering <strong>the</strong> living place, 153 and leaning<br />

against <strong>the</strong> door-lintel, stood <strong>the</strong>re crying: “<strong>The</strong> Teacher will attain<br />

Final <strong>Emancipation</strong> while I am still a Trainee with much to do, 154 he<br />

who has compassion for me!”<br />

<strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Gracious One addressed <strong>the</strong> monks, (saying): “Where, monks,<br />

is Ānanda?”<br />

153 <strong>The</strong> Commentary defines living place (vihāraṁ) here as a circular pavilion<br />

(maṇḍalamālo).<br />

154 A Trainee (Sekha) is one who is at least a Stream-Enterer (Sotāpanna), but<br />

has not become a Worthy One (Arahanta).<br />
