<strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Gracious One, after living near Nāḷandā for as long as he<br />
liked, addressed venerable Ānanda, (saying): “Come Ānanda let us<br />
approach Pāṭaligāma.” 42<br />
“Very well, reverend Sir,” venerable Ānanda replied to <strong>the</strong> Gracious<br />
One. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Gracious One toge<strong>the</strong>r with a great Community of<br />
monks arrived at Pāṭaligāma.<br />
<strong>The</strong> laymen of Pāṭaligāma heard: “<strong>The</strong> Gracious One, it seems, had<br />
reached Pāṭaligāma.” <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> laymen of Pāṭaligāma approached <strong>the</strong><br />
Gracious One, and after approaching and worshipping <strong>the</strong> Gracious<br />
One, <strong>the</strong>y sat down on one side. While sitting on one side, <strong>the</strong> laymen<br />
of Pāṭaligāma said this to <strong>the</strong> Gracious One: “May <strong>the</strong> Gracious One<br />
