Further information on the South African music industry can be obtained from the <strong>Music</strong><br />

Africa Directory (www.pcb.co.za/sun) and from the Moshito organisation, described as a<br />

platform for the Business of <strong>Music</strong>. (See www.moshito.co.za.) The South African <strong>Music</strong><br />

Industry Cooperation Initiative (SAMICI) is a broad-based alliance of stakeholders in the<br />

South African <strong>Music</strong> Industry, working together with the public sector. Its raison d’etre<br />

is to maximise the role of the industry in economic development, job creation, poverty<br />

alleviation and socio-cultural development within the country. Moshito <strong>Music</strong><br />

Conference and Exhibition was set up as SAMICI’s first project on its journey to<br />

fulfilling its aspirations. All of this is highly positive: nevertheless the criticism is<br />

levelled by some that it is indicative of the music industry driving aspects of music which<br />

may be extremely important, and yet could be marginalised by those with an industry<br />

focus.<br />
