traditional and indigenous music of South Africa and the relief of poverty,<br />

distress and exploitation.<br />

• To promote and organise co-operation in the achievement of the above<br />

purpose and to this end to bring together representatives of statutory<br />

authorities, volunteer organizations and individuals engaged in the<br />

furtherance of the above purposes.<br />

• To assist artists/producers in tracing their intellectual rights. To promote the<br />

independent historically disadvantaged producers and production companies<br />

through empowerment initiatives.<br />

• To obtain and collect royalties and receive money and funds, by way of<br />

contributions, donations, affiliation fees, subscriptions, legacies, grants and<br />

any other lawful method, and accept and receive gifts of property of any<br />

description (whether subject to any special trust or not).<br />

• To procure and provide information.<br />

• Procure to be written and print, publish, issue and circulate gratuitously or otherwise<br />

any report or periodicals, books, pamphlets, leaflets or other documents.<br />

• To promote, encourage and undertake experimental work.<br />

• To encourage ownership and control of traditional and indigenous South<br />

African music by persons from the historically disadvantaged communities<br />

through the provision of education, technical, managerial, business and legal<br />

resources.<br />

• To promote small, medium and micro business within the music industry.<br />

• To ensure competition within the music industry, for traditional and<br />

indigenous South African music, through promoting a larger share of airtime<br />

broadcast on the airways in the Republic of South Africa.<br />

• To ensure that in relation to legislative enactments of the music industry in<br />

particular the traditional and indigenous artistes and musicians are duly taken<br />

into account.<br />

• To promote the empowerment and advancement of women in the music<br />

industry, in particular the traditional and indigenous women artiste musicians<br />

and producers.<br />

• To promote youth development in the music industry and, in particular, in<br />

the areas of traditional and indigenous South Africa music, through<br />

programmes, bursaries and scholarship.<br />

With a seed grant from the Department of Arts and Culture, the Trust has been able<br />

to establish offices and begin to operationalise its vision and objectives. Zakheni<br />

<strong>Music</strong> Trust started running music workshops in the major cities of the country like<br />

Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, East London and<br />

Pretoria from January 2001.<br />
