RISA is a voluntary, non-profit making, Section 21 company. One of RISA’s<br />

objectives is to nurture the growth of its members’ business interests as well as to<br />

preserve the development and advancement of the unique South African music<br />

heritage. The other primary objective of RISA is to combat music piracy in all its<br />

forms.<br />

RISA membership comprises more than 140 record companies as well as manufacturers,<br />

producers and marketers of records, pre-recorded tapes, compact discs and other sound<br />

carrying devices. The Association is funded by a levy on the manufacture or import of<br />

music products. RISA is based in Randburg, Johannesburg and comprises a 12 member<br />

executive committee and a secretariat. The executive committee is elected annually and is<br />

responsible for carrying out RISA’s objectives. RISA has successfully staged the South<br />

African <strong>Music</strong> award from 1995, sponsored by First National Bank (FNB).<br />

South African Blind <strong>Music</strong>ians Association (SABMA)<br />

SABMA is an association aimed at alleviating the plight of the blind and other<br />

disabled musicians by offering recording opportunities as well as training in the fields<br />

of record producing, sound engineering and music arrangements. It seeks to create<br />

opportunities for blind musicians all over South Africa to come together and discuss<br />

problems of mutual concern. Furthermore it provides legal advice, representation and<br />

negotiates on behalf of blind musicians in disputes on issues arising from and<br />

pertaining to the music industry. SABMA is committed to identifying young and/or<br />

up-coming blind musicians and to providing them with necessary training and support<br />

to enable them to realize their ultimate goal of turning professional.<br />

South African <strong>Music</strong> Rights Organization (SAMRO)<br />

SAMRO is a non-profit company that represents its composer, lyricist and music<br />

publisher members in relation to the Copyright Act of 1978 when work is performed<br />

in public, broadcast or transmitted in a diffusion service. It works on behalf of<br />

members to license the performance of their copyright musical works, collects the<br />

licence fees, assembles the information about the use of that music, computes and then<br />

distributes the appropriate royalties.<br />
