<strong>Music</strong>ians Union of South Africa (MUSA)<br />

MUSA was established in 1994 as a representative body for the protection and promotion<br />

of musicians’ rights and social security. Its members include composers, performers,<br />

technicians and music educators.<br />

MUSA’s services include:<br />

• Information service and liaison between prospective employers/agents and<br />

musicians on their database.<br />

• Lobbying for the creation of a National Social Security Fund.<br />

• Contribution to National Policy on behalf of musicians on matters of local<br />

music content, transformation of the music industry, intellectual property<br />

rights and general labour rights.<br />

MUSA is a member of the Bargaining <strong>Council</strong> for the Entertainment Industry, the<br />

emerging Sector Education and Training Authorities for entertainment and media<br />

industries and the Federation of <strong>International</strong> <strong>Music</strong>ians.<br />

National Arts <strong>Council</strong> of South Africa (NAC)<br />

The NAC was formed on 1 April 1997 as a statutory body. Its vision is to promote,<br />

through the Arts, the free expression of South Africa’s cultures and its mission is to<br />

develop and promote excellence in the Arts.<br />

The NAC is dependent on a budget which is voted annually by parliament and disbursed<br />

by the Department of Arts and Culture. It is controlled by a board which consists of 12<br />

nationally elected and nine provincially elected members.<br />

An administrative staff is headed by a chief executive officer who is responsible for<br />

implementing decisions made by the board. It offers support in the form of financial<br />

assistance to organizations, projects and individuals involved in craft, dance and<br />

choreography, literature, music and opera, theatre and musical theatre and visual arts.<br />
