cessive sheykh of the Saadecyeh. Some persons assert that<br />

the horse is unshod for the occasion, but I thought I could<br />

perceive that this was not the case. They say, also, that the<br />

animal is trained for the purpose ; but if so, this would only<br />

account for the least surprising of the circumstances ; I mean,<br />

for the fact of the horse being made to tread on human<br />

beings—an act from which, it is well known, that animal<br />

is very averse. The present sheykh of the Saadeeyeh refused,<br />

for several years, to perform the Doseh. By much entreaty,<br />

he was prevailed upon to empower another person to do it.<br />

This person, a blind man, did it successfully ; but soon after<br />

died ; and the sheykh of the Saadeeyeh then yielded to the<br />

request of his darweeshes ; and has since always performed<br />

the Doseh himself."
